Vaccinium macrocarpon is the American botanical name for Cranberry. Since 1816 Cranberries have been cultivated in USA, and today the taste of the thoroughbred red berries is known all over the world. The original American people - Indians used Cranberries for food. They also found out that mashed Cranberries could heal wounds, and the juice was used for dyeing of blankets and fabrics, which gave a beautiful ruby red colour. It was German immigrants who gave Cranberry its present name. The special shape and beautiful pink flowers of the Cranberry look like the beak and head of a crane, and the German immigrants called the fruit Kraanbere, which became Cranberry in English over time.
